Mauricio Ramirez’s mural “Pilsen Warrior,” which spans a three-story apartment building, depicts an Aztec warrior in different stages of life. The mural depicts a young boy in feathered Aztec garments looking up at an adolescent boy dressed in a Mexican serape. The adolescent boy in turn is looking up at an Aztec eagle warrior. The older Aztec eagle warrior is depicted looking back towards the adolescent boy and child. It is through these three figures that Ramirez has further evolved his colorful and geometric-based style, which he has self-described as “poly wave.” The figures are set against the backdrop of a geometric blue sky and triangular green mountains.
The rank of eagle warrior, one of the highest ranks within Aztec society, could only be reached through the exhibition of great physical strength, skill, and prowess. The capturing of enemy soldiers was also necessary in order to obtain the eagle rank. In battle, Aztec eagle warriors wore eagle headdresses and carried adorned shields. In addition, eagle warriors notably worshiped Huizilopochtli, the war god who is often depicted as an eagle.
In many ways the mural can be interpreted as younger Mexican generations looking towards the future, and older established generations looking back towards their community and the path they have taken to get to where they are. In many ways, the mural plays on the theme of remembering one’s roots. The mural could also be seen as reflecting Pilsen’s past, present, and future as a culturally vibrant community. The mural could also be interpreted to comment on the passing of traditions. The Aztec mythology focus within the mural in of itself points to a Mexican culture which celebrates its indigenous roots. It is clear that Ramirez had Pilsen in mind and wanted to have the community be involved with his creation, even going as far as accepting painting help from passersby.
