Themes: Catholicism, flowers, historical figures, commissioned
This monumental image of the Virgen de Guadalupe with Juan Diego was commissioned by the homeowner. Artistically, it includes traditional motifs associated with this apparition of the Virgin, including: roses and a blue mantle with yellow stars. These traditionalist symbols are juxtaposed with a modern, more abstract style with the colorful lines that stretch across the building. The Virgin gestures toward an eagle, which towers over the desert-like landscape filled with cacti and large flowers. The eagle has a minimalist snake in its mouth, which mimics the eagle that can be found on the Mexican flag. Blending religious and nationalist imagery is a common motif in Guadalupan imagery.
